I read the Sword Dancer on a random whim at work.The main character is realistic and empathetic. It is easy to root for him as he deals with bullies, isolation, and other set backs to his dreams. I like that the author shows that the main character struggles to achieve and isn't given his title because "he is the chosen one" as is too often found in fantasy.
The story also has a great amount of steam-punk world building. The scale is small and intimate. It's enough to give you the impression of a much larger world outside of a back water mining town in an empire.
